Locally it’s known as Copeton Dam, otherwise known as Copeton Waters State Park this amazing man made inland haven is located South of Inverell in NSW on the New England Ranges. Located 570km north-west of Sydney, 440km south-west of Brisbane and 40km from the regional hub of Inverell, Copeton is easily accessed via the Gwydir Highway. It’s a hidden gem for family camping in NSW.

It may not be what you would expect to find tucked away in regional NSW, but it offers all the facilities and more that you need to camp in comfort, or dare I say, a little bit of luxury with the family.

Holding 3 times more water than Sydney Harbour, there’s plenty of space to enjoy boating, and swimming, and if you’re clever enough, throw in the line and catch some fresh fish to cook on the camp fire for dinner!

Copeton Waters State Park is a GREAT place to camp with the kids. Accommodation from bush camping to deluxe cabins is available. Pets are welcome in camp areas, and there are all the necessary facilities on hand. Hot showers, general store, huge kids playground and jumping pillow, take away food, bait & ice, bbq areas and more. Definitely a great place for long or short stays.

Accommodation at Copeton Waters:

You have a few accommodation choices when visiting Copeton Dam.

Firstly, there’s a fully managed Caravan Park – Jaycee Park & Copeton Bay offer an entire range of accommodation to suit both campers and those who like a little more luxury. With everything from powered sites, right through to Deluxe Cabins there are choices for all tastes and budgets. Features include a camp kitchen, ameneties blocks, gas bbq’s & laundry as well as other facilities that are available to all campers within the park such as general store, playground take away food etc.

Secondly, (for those who enjoy a little more space a more natural camp space) unpowered camp sites are available throughout the park area and still offer great facilities including hot showers, BBQ sites and Picnic tables. There is such a large area to choose your bush camp from that you’ll be spoiled for choice. With sites close to boat ramps, bbq’s, hot showers, grassed areas, picnic tables, with views of the water, wildlife and rolling mountains, it truly is like waking up and stepping outside your tent into paradise every morning.

Getting to Copeton Waters State Park:

From Inverell, travel along the Gwydir Highway heading west towards Moree. Around 3kms from the edge of town, turn left onto Copeton Dam Road.Travel along for 40kms. Once you cross the Dam Wall, Copeton Waters State Park is the first left. Access is also available via Bundarra and Bingara along Copeton Dam Road, there are signs to follow.

Family Friendly Features:

Copeton Dam is FUN! It allows you to be tucked away in your own private camp area, wander on up to the hot showers and flushing toilets, grab supplies from the general store, even a take away meal if you don’t feel like stoking the camp fire. You can take the family dog (please be responsible), the kids can have a whole stack of fun on the play equipment including water park and jumping pillow ALL OF THIS while being surrounded by some of the most beautiful nature, and friendly wildlife you’ll experience in a lifetime.

The best part is, that even though all of those amazing features exist, if you choose not to use any of them, there’s still plenty of area to be tucked away for a full bush style camp without setting sight on the facilities the entire time you’re there. The size of the Dam means that you’ll need to drive up to the main kiosk and play area unless you’re camping in the caravan park, but that’s what makes it such a wonderful place to  stay. You really can get back to nature as a family, yet still have all the comfort that you need right at hand.
